As a core component of optical modules, high-speed EML chips have long relied on imports. At the 2025 OptoElectronics and Communications Conference (OECC), Zetta Semiconductor announced the successful development of a mass-producible 100G PAM4 Electro-Absorption Modulated Laser (EML), marking a critical advancement in the mass production of high-speed optical communication chips. This achievement was led by Dr. K-H. Huang, with the related paper published at OECC, drawing significant industry attention.
Innovation-Driven Breakthrough in Mass Production
Zetta Semiconductor employs a single-ridge waveguide structure and single-butt-joint regrowth technology, simplifying the complex fabrication process of traditional EML while optimizing the anti-reflection (AR) coating, significantly reducing signal degradation from residual reflections. Additionally, by precisely tuning the bandgap and strain of the InGaAsP multiple quantum well (MQW), the team achieved industry-leading photoelectric performance and production stability.
High Performance Meets International Standards
Test results demonstrate a 3 dB bandwidth of 54 GHz, with TDECQ (Transmitter and Dispersion Eye Closure Quaternary) consistently below 3.0 dB across an operating range of 25°C to 70°C, fully complying with IEEE standards. This ensures robust 100G PAM4 signal transmission, making the chip ideal for next-gen data centers and 5G optical modules.
Mass Production Readiness for Rapid Deployment
Zetta has established a fully autonomous 3-inch wafer production line, covering epitaxial growth, lithography, etching, and chip testing. A semi-automated testing system was also developed to efficiently evaluate DC characteristics, high-frequency response, and PAM4 eye diagrams, paving the way for large-scale production.
Dr. K-H. Huang emphasized: "Our design balances performance with cost-effective, high-yield manufacturability. As demand surges for high-speed modules in 5G and data centers, Zetta’s 100G PAM4 EML will reduce supply chain risks and accelerate domestic adoption."
Market Impact: Enabling Domestic Supply Chain Independence
With global data traffic soaring, demand for 100G+ optical modules continues to climb. Zetta’s breakthrough not only fills China’s gap in high-end EML production but also strengthens the self-sufficiency of its optical communication industry. The technology is extendable to 200G/400G+ markets, driving the next phase of global optical innovation.
